Making Progress Through the Holidays: Tips from Tucson Personal Trainers!

Published On: October 29, 2025

The holiday season is here, and for many people, it’s a time filled with family gatherings, delicious food, and celebrations. But if you’re working toward your fitness goals, this time of year can also bring a little anxiety.

Being a personal trainer going on 12 years now, I see it every year. Clients worry that the holidays will undo their progress or throw them off track. But here’s the truth: you can absolutely enjoy your holidays and still make progress toward your goals.

The Holidays Don’t Have to Derail Your Fitness Goals

First things first, enjoy yourself. The holidays aren’t meant to be miserable or restrictive. You can savor your favorite foods, spend time with loved ones, and still feel great about your fitness journey.

One off day, or even a few indulgent meals, doesn’t erase all the hard work you’ve put in. What really matters is what you do most of the time, not the occasional treat or skipped workout.

What truly slows people down is the mindset of “I’ll start again in January.” That’s the real progress killer. When you delay your health goals, you lose momentum, confidence, and energy. Instead, stay consistent through the season and enter the new year feeling strong, not like you’re starting from zero.

Stay Active Even When Life Gets Busy

The best way to stay consistent during the holidays is to plan your workouts like appointments. Put them on your calendar and treat them as non-negotiable.

Here’s a tip I give many of my Tucson personal training clients: add movement into your social plans. Try these simple ideas that fit perfectly with our Tucson lifestyle and weather:

1. Go for a family walk after dinner.
Take advantage of our beautiful Arizona evenings and stroll through your neighborhood or a nearby park.

2. Get outside and play.
Join in outdoor games with family or friends, or plan a quick hike at Sabino Canyon or Tumamoc Hill.

3. Turn your gatherings into movement.
Play music, dance, or organize a quick active game with your group. Staying active doesn’t have to mean going to the gym.

The key is to stay moving in fun, flexible ways that make you feel good. Progress happens when fitness fits your life, not when it becomes a chore.

Keep a Positive and Realistic Mindset

Progress is not about perfection. It’s about persistence and consistency. You don’t need to “earn” your food or punish yourself with extra workouts. The goal is to build a sustainable, balanced lifestyle that allows room for joy, relaxation, and celebration.

If you catch yourself thinking, “I’ve already blown it,” take a deep breath and start fresh with your next choice. One meal or missed workout doesn’t undo your results. What matters is that you keep returning to the habits that make you feel strong, confident, and healthy.

Drink water, get enough sleep, move your body, and focus on how good those things make you feel.
